Retail sales decline for third straight month

“Core” retail sales were unchanged.

Retail sales decreased 0.6% last month, according to data released by the Commerce Department Thursday. This follows a 0.8% decrease in January.

Sales excluding autos, gasoline, building materials and food services, so-called “core retail sales,” were unchanged, compared to a 0.1% decrease in January.

Although the nation’s severe winter weather may have had a role in dampening consumer spending, the fact that the recent three-month decline in retail sales raises worries about the US economic recovery’s staying power.
