Weekly jobless claims plunge to 15-year low

Drop far exceeds analysts’ expectations.

The Labor Department today reported that seasonally-adjusted initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ended January 24 were 265,000, a decrease of 43,000 from the previous week's revised figure.

Analysts had expected a decrease to 300,000.

The 4-week moving average, which smoothes out volatility to a certain extent, increased 8,250 to 298,500.

The week’s drop in claims reversed the prior week’s increase, which was largely considered an anomaly due to data adjustments, suggesting gaining strength in the labor markets.
