Producer prices plunge in December

Largest drop in the PPI in three years.

The seasonally-adjusted Producer Price Index for final demand fell 0.3% in December, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.  This followed a decrease of 0.2% in November.  It was the largest drop in three years.

Analysts had expected a 0.4% decrease.

In the 12 months through November, producer prices increased 1.1%.

Producer prices excluding volatile food and energy costs increased 0.1%, and have increased 1.3% in the 12 months through December.
