Jobless claims decrease

Decrease of 36,000 more than expected.

The Labor Department today reported that seasonally-adjusted initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ended September 13 were 280,000, a decrease of 36,000 from the previous week's revised figure.

Analysts had expected claims to come in at 305,000.

The 4-week moving average, which smoothes out volatility to a certain extent, increased 4,750 to 299,500.

The week’s data was a welcome sign for the economy, as prior week’s claims had come in unexpectedly high, causing some analysts to worry that jobs growth might be slowing down.
