Retail sales rise in August

August results meet expectations.

Retail sales rose 0.6% last month, according to data released by the Commerce Department today, following a revised 0.3% increase in July.

The results were in line with analyst expectations.

Sales excluding autos, gasoline, building materials and food services, so-called “core sales,” rose 0.4% in August, after a revised 0.4% increase in July.

The satisfactory results for August will likely dampen worries about consumer spending in the third quarter.
